Artist Statement

"I'm interested in creating narratives, using figures and visuals to indicate a story without using words. I leave the narrative's direction up to the viewer, as the creation process itself is the most rewarding part for me. I want to create stories about relationships and people viewers can understand, but invite them to apply those familiar concepts to more fantastical environments."

Susie Kofuji is an illustrator, photographer, and digital media artist. She is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Minnesota and is anticipated to graduate in May 2018. Artist Statement

"I create illustrative drawings using graphite pencil, color pencil, ink, photography, and digital media that depict a narrative either through a single image or through several. My illustrations often explore themes of loneliness and death, based on my curiosity about life-after-death (both as the person who dies and those who are left behind) and the inhibiting consequences of feeling isolated. My themes are reflected by a muted color palette and a lonesome subject as the focal point."

artist Statement

"When I create art, I engage in an exploration of materials, process, and methods. Though my primary concentration is Photography, I often consider my work as encompassing a mixture of 2- dimensional (and sometimes 3-dimensional) media.  I enjoy investigating materials while building playful connections. While I work with a variety of medium, much of my work centers on abstract representations of the world. The mediums are represented through the treatment, manipulation and distortion of surface in single artworks as well as in series works. My manipulated visuals appear expressionistic and other-worldy. Whether it be photographing images of the natural world through film, digital and hybrid photos, or combining traditional painting materials with man-made and natural textural elements, my artistic intention is to entice the viewer’s curiosity, and to alter their perception of the world."
